The BBB is a private organization, not a licensing board — so accreditation is never a substitute for a license. Cross-check these numbers with each state board yourself; that is exactly why we publish them.

CONSUMER GUIDE / HOW THE BBB WORKS

How BBB accreditation, ratings, and reviews actually work

Before you read any restoration contractor's profile — including ours — it helps to know exactly what the BBB measures, and what it doesn't.

What the Better Business Bureau actually is

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is a private, non-profit organization — not a government agency and not a licensing board. It does not certify that a contractor is licensed, and it cannot fine a business or force it to do anything. What the BBB does is maintain a public profile for a business, collect and verify customer reviews and complaints, and publish a letter rating that reflects how the business behaves toward its customers, especially how it responds when something goes wrong.

Because BBB accreditation is voluntary and paid, a business chooses to be accredited — but the BBB only grants accreditation to companies that meet its published standards, and it can revoke accreditation if a business stops meeting them. That distinction matters when you are reading any contractor's profile: accreditation signals a company willing to be held to a written standard and to answer complaints in a public forum, rather than one that stays unlisted and unaccountable.

The 8 BBB Standards for Trust (what accreditation requires)

To become and stay BBB Accredited, a business agrees to meet the BBB's eight Standards for Trust. These are the commitments behind the "Accredited Business" seal — not a marketing badge you can simply buy without meeting the criteria:

  • Build Trust — maintain a positive track record and a proven record of ethical conduct in the marketplace.
  • Advertise Honestly — follow established standards of advertising and selling, with no misleading claims.
  • Tell the Truth — represent products and services clearly and completely, disclosing material terms.
  • Be Transparent — openly identify the nature, location, and ownership of the business and disclose all material facts.
  • Honor Promises — abide by written agreements and verbal representations.
  • Be Responsive — address disputes forwarded by the BBB quickly and in good faith.
  • Safeguard Privacy — protect any consumer data collected and respect consumer preferences.
  • Embody Integrity — approach all business dealings and marketplace transactions with honesty.

How the BBB rating (A+ to F) is calculated

The BBB rating is a letter grade from A+ down to F, and — this is the part most people miss — it is primarily a measure of complaint handling, not of how many five-star reviews a business has. A company with glowing customer reviews can still carry a mid-range letter rating if it has open complaints or was slow to respond to them, and a company with very few reviews can carry a high rating simply because it has a clean, responsive complaint record.

The BBB weighs a number of factors into that letter grade. Understanding them tells you exactly what a rating is — and is not — evidence of:

  • Complaint volume relative to the size of the business — more customers naturally means more contacts, so the count is weighed against volume.
  • Whether complaints were answered, and how quickly the business responded to the BBB.
  • Whether complaints were resolved to the customer's satisfaction, or left unresolved.
  • The type of business and its industry.
  • Time in business — a longer verifiable track record generally supports a higher rating.
  • Transparent business practices, including clear disclosure of ownership and contact information.
  • Whether the business honored its commitments to the BBB.
  • Licensing and any government actions on record against the business.
  • Honest advertising and truthful representation of products and services.

BBB rating vs. BBB customer reviews — two different things

Restoration Doctor Water Removal's BBB profile shows two separate signals, and confusing them is the single most common mistake consumers make when reading a profile. The BBB rating is the A+–F letter grade described above — a complaint-handling score set by the BBB's own algorithm. The customer review average is a separate 1-to-5 star figure, calculated only from the star ratings that individual customers submit. On this profile that customer-review average is 4.39 stars across 51 reviews.

The two do not move together, and neither one changes the other. A business cannot raise its letter grade by collecting more five-star reviews, and it cannot lower its review average by resolving a complaint. When you evaluate any restoration contractor, read both — the letter grade for how the company handles problems, and the star reviews for what individual customers experienced. Then click through to the live profile, where you can see the complaint detail behind the letter grade and every review behind the average, positive and negative alike.

How the BBB verifies the customer reviews it publishes

BBB customer reviews are not anonymous, unmoderated comments. Before a review is published, the BBB takes steps to confirm the reviewer is a real person who had a genuine interaction with the business — typically by verifying an email address or phone number, and asking the reviewer to affirm the review reflects an actual experience. Reviews that cannot be verified, or that violate the BBB's review policy, are not published.

Three things follow from how BBB handles reviews, and they are worth knowing before you weigh any company's star average:

  • The business can publicly respond to any review — so you can read both the customer's account and the company's reply side by side.
  • Reviews are not deleted because a business is accredited or pays for accreditation; accreditation status does not buy the removal of a critical review.
  • Both positive and negative reviews stay on the profile, which is why a real profile — including this one — shows a range of experiences rather than a wall of only-perfect scores.

After finally getting everything moved into our new home, I was exhausted and decided to use the stand-alone shower for the first time in my master bathroom. My daughter ran in to tell me there was water gushing into my closet. I quickly looked for someone to call specializing in this kind of situation, and found Restoration Doctor 24/7 Rapid Respone. It was late at night, yet I spoke to a real person who assured me they would be there within a half-hour. They came out and assessed the situation, and they were able to fix the problem quickly and efficiently, and made sure my closet was water-free. I was afraid of how much it was going to cost, especially having to come out at such a late hour, but they were extremely affordable! They were professional and friendly. Highly reccomend this company!

This company went above and beyond to fix my leak I had under my kitchen sink. The service was fast and affordable too! I highly recommend this company! Thank you so much!
Angela D · 01/21/2026via BBB.org
I used this restoration company after water damage spread through part of the house and affected more than just the floors. What I was most worried about was a built-in hallway bookshelf that had absorbed moisture and begun to separate at the seams. I assumed it would need to be removed, but they dried it properly, repaired the damage, and matched the finish, so it blended back in. Im happy with how it turned out.

They did an excellent job here at home. We had been having problems with leaks for many months and could never find anyone who would charge a reasonable price for quality service.
Andrew M · 11/13/2025via BBB.org
The restoration doctor was extremely fast in getting my basements water infiltration fixed. Every rain would cause a lot of puddles in the basement. Their crew investigated, found problems in pipes and the basements window frames; they fixed it quickly, and I have not had any water infiltration issues so far.
Rebeccah M · 11/13/2025via BBB.org
There was a busted pipe in the yard, causing a huge damp spot in the garden and releasing a lot of water. We got the restoration doctor to take a look, and their crew quickly diagnosed the busted pipe and quoted us. We needed that to be fixed asap since we couldnt let the garden get more damaged, and we liked the quote, so we went ahead with them. Im satisfied with how quick and professional they were.
Cibelle M · 09/15/2025via BBB.org
My house had a roof leak that got to an extreme point during a recent storm. A lot of water leaked into one of our rooms and made a big mess; paint damage, and a big roof damage that could be seen inside and outside the house. I contacted the Restoration Doctor for an emergency, and they arrived within minutes and did some quick patching and added temporary tarps. Note that all of this happened during the storm. They came back later to do the proper fixes and restoration. It was a reliable experience.
Lorena B · 09/12/2025via BBB.org
Some heavy rain overnight got our basement moderately flooded. It was just enough to damage some furniture, create a mess, and get some of our machines wet and malfunctioning. First contact with the Restoration Doctor, and they assured us there was a team ready to take care of the flooded water, damaged furniture, and machine. We agreed on a quote, and a crew arrived in about 30 minutes. They took care of the flood in about an hour, took the few machines and got them fixed the next day, and the wood furniture too. A complete fine service, really.
Milena S · 09/05/2025via BBB.org
We got a sudden sewage leak in the basement early in the morning that was really bad. We had to search for someone who could not only repair the leak but also clean the whole mess it left. The Restoration Doctor quoted us over the phone and, in a few minutes, a crew of three arrived at our house with repair and cleaning gear. They fixed the leak and disinfected the whole basement. Quick and professional.
Nicole O · 09/04/2025via BBB.org
Our houses roof got pretty banged up because of the last hailstorm. We found the restoration doctor online and asked them to take a look; they visited and it turned out we would need some siding, roof, and gutter repairs. They were pretty transparent in explaining the quote, and we agreed on the service. A few minutes later, a crew arrived and fixed it in about two to three hours. I trust their customer service!
Laryssa A · 09/03/2025via BBB.org
I was suspecting busted pipes since my house was getting a water infiltration under the paint in the main hall. We couldnt find the root of the problem ourselves, so we contacted someone from the Restoration Doctor team to visit and consult about the issue. They found the busted pipe and sealing problems causing the infiltration, and already had the tools to fix it. They gave us a good quote and fixed the problem per our approval pretty quickly. Reliable company!
Lara A · 09/02/2025via BBB.org
My houses gutters took a big hit from the last hailstorm, and I needed them fixed ASAP the next morning. The Restoration Doctor crew picked it up very early in the morning and repaired it all without a single setback. Theyre pretty organized, and I was happy with the quote. The gutters were prepared and reinforced for the next hailstorm in less than two hours.
Julio C · 08/29/2025via BBB.org
We were having a problem with sewage backup in the house, which escalated horribly. I called the restoration doctor after work hours since the sewage problem became sort of an emergency at the time, and they were quick. Not long after calling, they arrived with a lot of equipment and a crew of four. They did a lot of sewage cleaning, removed blockage, and fixed some damage to the sewer line. The entire repair happened pretty quickly. Im very happy with the service.
Aline H · 08/28/2025via BBB.org
I had the help of the restoration doctor with preparing my house and avoiding future problems. I bought this house recently, but I found that it had a history of water infiltration during rainy weather and other weaknesses to hailstorms. My request was for them to check the weak spots and propose how to get the house prepared to endure the next rain and hailstorms. I had them working on and setting up the suggestions they gave me, and the house has not shown any of its past chronic problems ever since.
Sabrina G · 08/27/2025via BBB.org
We had a huge sewage backup in our home and I thought my house was ruined forever. I dont wish this disaster on anyone. I mean inches of putrid water throughout the house. Thankfully I found the Restoration Doctor. He handled everything from the carpets, walls and furniture. A lot had to be disposed of and I didn't think I'd be able to afford fixing and replacing everything but they even helped with my insurance. The manager ***** was great and I recommend you ask for him if your in need.

How to read any restoration contractor's BBB profile

Water, fire, and sewage losses force fast decisions, and a BBB profile is one of the quickest ways to vet a contractor before you let a crew into your home. Here is a checklist you can apply to any restoration company's profile — not just ours — to separate a transparent operator from a risky one:

  • Confirm accreditation and how long it has been held. A business accredited for years (Restoration Doctor Water Removal has been accredited since 2019) has a longer track record to judge than a brand-new listing.
  • Read the letter rating as a complaint-handling score, then open the complaints themselves — look at whether the business responded, and whether disputes were resolved.
  • Check review recency, not just the average. A profile with recent reviews shows a business that is currently active and currently accountable.
  • Read the negative reviews and the company's replies. How a contractor answers a critical review tells you more than a dozen five-star ratings.
  • Cross-check licensing independently. The BBB does not license contractors — verify the actual license numbers with the state board (for Restoration Doctor: VA DPOR #2705191604, MD MHIC #167541, DC BBL #410524000721).
  • Confirm the legal entity behind the trade name. "Restoration Doctor" is the trade name of VA Water Damage LLC — the licensed entity that actually performs the work and holds the record.

How to leave a BBB review for Restoration Doctor Water Removal

If Restoration Doctor Water Removal has worked on your property, a BBB review helps the next homeowner make a faster, better-informed decision — and because BBB verifies reviewers, your review carries weight. Leaving one takes a few minutes:

  • Open the Restoration Doctor Water Removal BBB profile (linked on this page) and choose "Write a Review" / "Customer Reviews."
  • Select your star rating (1 to 5) and describe your actual experience — what the loss was, how the crew responded, and how the work turned out.
  • Verify your email address or phone number when BBB prompts you; this is the step that lets BBB confirm you are a real customer before publishing.
  • Submit. BBB reviews the submission against its policy, then publishes it — and Restoration Doctor may respond publicly on the profile.
