What board-up and tarping are
Board-up and tarping are temporary protection. A tarp covers a roof breach, and board-up covers a broken window, a damaged door or an exterior opening, so rain, wind and entry are kept out until permanent repairs can be made. They stop the damage from growing. They do not repair the roof, the window or the wall.
The need is time sensitive because storm damage compounds while an opening stays open. Rain that follows a storm can enter through the same breach for days, and wet materials are at risk of mold growth within 24 to 48 hours.
When it applies
The usual triggers are a tree or limb on the roof, wind-lifted shingles, a window or door broken by storm debris, and the openings left after a fire. In each case the first job is to close the opening, and the second is to deal with any water that already got in.
What the crew does
We close the opening first. On a roof that means a tarp spread over the damaged section and tied down. On a window, a door or a wall opening it means board-up. Then we extract and dry what already got wet, and we photograph all of it before any repair starts. We can provide those photos to you.
If the storm reached the interior, the same response continues into extraction, moisture mapping and structural drying with documented readings, so the stabilization and the water mitigation are one coordinated effort rather than two vendors with a gap between them.
Dispatch runs 24/7 and we can be on-site in as little as 60 minutes across the Northern Virginia core. Response times vary based on crew availability and demand.
A documented roof tarp in Vienna
Our project records include a roof tarp job in Vienna, VA. It is logged in 206 CompanyCam photos dated between March 17 and March 29, 2026. Earlier photos in the record show a tree across the roof and cut branches lying on the shingles. The photos below show a blue tarp folded on the shingles, spread over one section of the roof and tied down with rope, and the attic under it, with broken roof framing and a meter lying on the insulation. Meter and thermal-camera photos taken in the attic are in the same record.
That file shows a roof tarp and the interior check that followed it. It does not show a window or door board-up, so this page says nothing about one for that job. We do not post the street or the customer, and we state no response time or result for the job.
Safety and limits
Do not go up on a wet or damaged roof, and stay out from under sagging or bulging ceilings, because trapped water is heavy and drops without warning. Tarp only what can be done safely from the ground. Roof height, pitch, wind and wet surfaces can limit what is safe to do, and the crew decides on site.
After the opening is closed
A tarp or boards are not the finished repair. Permanent roof, window, door and structural repairs are a separate scope under a separate written agreement, once the weather and the schedule allow. Keep the photographs and the records of what was covered, and the date.
